Uob Ladies Card
Photographer Jay Santini is in love with the delicate, lovely, Painted-Lady in front of his camera lens. But she is a creature of freedom and his love is not returned. It doesn’t matter to him. He captures her beauty just before she takes flight. He is dedicated to her and will continue to take her picture week after week. She is a Painted Lady butterfly after all, and as the saying goes, “Butterflies are free.” That is why this talented photographer is passionate about his number one subject, “les papillons”. “I just love trying to capture the beauty of the butterfly! They are so fragile, and yet they’re so free. They have always represented freedom. There are stories of children who were prisoners during the Holocaust who drew pictures of butterflies on the walls.”
The Butterfly Man
Santini is often called the “Butterfly Man.” When we did this interview he was living in Yountville, California. He is a man with the vibrance of a 19 year-old in his 70 year-old body. His enthusiasm for the magical winged creature is contagious. “I photograph them over and over, because each time, even if it’s the same butterfly, their position is different, the lighting and background are different,” said Santini. Santini said he is also fascinated by the transient nature of butterflies. “Most of them don’t live for more than 3 or 4 weeks. Like the Atlas Moth that is born with no mouth and lives for only a week or two at the most, from whatever food stores it has in its body. Did you know there are over 750 indigenous butterflies in North America?” added Santini, who is a walking Encyclopedia of information on butterflies. Santini has memorized the common and scientific names for about one hundred butterflies, by using flash cards. Borne in Los Angeles, Santini ended up in Yountville after a friend invited him to come up in 1967. He worked as a surgical prep nurse at St. Helena Hospital, and a nurse’s aid at Calistoga Convalescence Hospital before he took a job as a hospital aide at the Veteran’s Home in Yountville. In 1976, he was made Chief of Respiratory Therapy, a job he enjoyed until his retirement in 2004. “I was employed at the Home for 35 years. I met my wife Karen, who worked as an LVN at the Home 25 years ago.” Santini has 3 grown daughters from a previous marriage. He started doing photography about 15 years ago, but had the inkling for it since he was a child. “The very first camera I got as a child was an Argus, and I’m sorry I didn’t catch fire with it then,” remembered Santini. Santini had some success as a wedding photographer, before becoming a wildlife photographer.
