The Snowy Day Activity Card

May 8 is Mother's Day. After a campaign by Anna Marie Jarvis, on May 8, 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signed a congressional resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis had already created the Mother's Day International Association and trademarked the phrases, "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day".

Canada and many other countries around the world also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, although some countries honor mothers during March. Prior to the establishment of the modern official Mother's Day holiday, Christian Europeans celebrated Mothering Sunday to honor mothers and motherhood. Ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated Hilaria, a festival for Cybele, a mother goddess, during a week in March around the vernal equinox. Ancient Romans celebrated Matronalia, a festival for Juno, the goddess of childbirth.
