Recent complaints by consumers indicate that credit card fraud is on the rise and that, certain precautions need to be taken while doing any kind of business online. This kind of fraud falls under the crime of identity theft, which happens when someone, without your consent acquires a piece of your information and uses it to commit a criminal offence; in this case, your credit card details. A publication from the FBI website indicates a survey conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2006 estimating an amount 8.3 million Americans consumers (3.7% of the adult population) fell victims to identify theft, with a great portion of them credit card related.
This article relates my personal experience with credit card identity theft and I’m very grateful to share this with you because I know it shall be of great help to others. It commenced when I started getting all kinds of invitations in my emails to download very important files online for free. I joined the bandwagon and got so immersed with these freebies that another friend recommended I get into the torrents, which are far easier and faster when it comes to downloading peer-to-peer files.
