Jewish Wedding Greeting Cards

Giving and receiving greeting cards is a custom common to many countries and cultures. Special occasions or celebrations of life events such as birthdays, anniversaries, marriage, graduations, and religious holidays are recognized with a card.

Christmas and Valentines Cards are a Small Part of a Global Industry

In the United States alone, 7 billion cards are sold each year, amounting to $7.5 billion in annual sales. The exchange of greeting cards in North America is extremely popular. Nine out of ten households in the US purchase greeting cards. Seasonal cards such as Christmas or Valentines make up half of all sales and everyday cards such as Get Well, Weddings, Anniversaries and Birthdays make up the other half.

Sending Greeting is an Ancient Tradition

Historians suggest that the early Chinese sent New Years messages and Egyptians recorded greetings on papyrus and had messengers deliver them to friends. Ancient Greeks are thought to have written verse in scrolls. In the Middle Ages, German’s made woodcuts bearing sentiments and messages. The first known Valentine’s card, now on display at the British Library Museum, was given in 1415.
