Day Ecard High Holi Jewish
The Old City of Jerusalem is holy to the world's three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The city is divided into four quarters: Armenian, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. Each quarter is full of unique tourist attractions and holy sights. This article will provide some tips for those who wish to take a self-guided walking tour of the Jewish quarter. It is highly advisable to keep a map handy, because the Old City can sometimes be a confusing place.
Right Outside The Walls
If one is coming from the center of town, one might want to stop off at the Mamilla Mall, an outdoor promenade full of upscale shops and cafes located right outside of the Jaffa Gate, the entrance to the Armenian Quarter. If one is travelling by taxi from the center of town, starting your tour with the Mamilla Mall will probably save you some cab fare as well.
Inside the Jaffa Gate
From Mamilla, one walks up the steps to the Jaffa Gate. This gate leads into the Armenian Quarter. As one walks up the hill, one will encounter a variety of small shops leading up to the shuk, or Arab market, which is technically in the Muslim Quarter. Upon stepping into the shuk, one is immersed in the sounds, sights and smells of the Middle East as it is portrayed in movies. One can go through the shuk to get to the Jewish Quarter, however, one should be aware that while the shuk is generally safe, a British Jewish student was stabbed there in 2005.
