Cardiovascular Education Technology
Technology is everywhere in our society. Webster’s Dictionary defines technology as “the science of the practical or industrial arts.” What technology is has changed significantly over the years. Walter Ong describes writing as “in a way the most drastic of […] technologies of the word” (22). In the early 1800s, the chalkboard was new technology in schools. In modern day terms, with the context of using technology in schools, this generally refers to the use of computers and computer technology as tools and aids to help teachers teach and students learn. However, the question can be raised as to whether technology has any effect on education. Does it play a role in the students learning? Through my research, I have concluded that technology plays a major role in the child’s learning and in this paper, I will illustrate how technology in the classroom can increase student achievement.
During the twentieth century, a variety of new devices were invented that provided new ways for teachers to present their lessons. When motion pictures entered the classrooms, some thought that books would become obsolete. Others felt that it would be possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture and it would soon replace the teacher. Moreover was the concern for children, and if the motion picture was a distraction to their learning. According to Nelson Green, author of “Motion Pictures in the Classroom,” the motion picture allowed students’ “minds to work directly upon the realities of the physical to the eye, rather than upon distorted images of those realities vaguely suggested to the mind by words” (Green, 123). Clearly, the motion picture was not a distraction to student’s learning. Also, this invention, which is only two of hundreds, has not made the teacher’s role obsolete. They have simply provided tools to make teaching and the learning experience more effective and enjoyable.
Some people believe that by introducing computers into classrooms, society is beginning to replace the role of teachers with today’s technology. This is untrue. Although it will, and it has, changed the role of the teacher, as well as the role of the student, the computer – just as the motion picture and the chalkboard – will enhance the classroom. It will bring about new techniques of teaching and learning.
